Who invented the Bra

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

1907, was the year when the word brassiere was first reported in an American copy of Vogue. Most major designers of the era tried to lay claim to designing the first bra but in 1914 a woman by the name Mary Phelps-Jacobs patented the first bra and thus gives her the credit for the first bra even though it is known that other bras were around before this.

The Corset can be traced back to about 2000 BC and thru time woman used different methods to support or restrict the breasts from moving. My belief is that as time evolved so did the bra and some people can take credit for different design elements in the bra but many have played a hand in the concept and development as we know it today.

Laundering your Lingerie

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Most women who take the time to get good fitting lingerie want it to last. So here is some advise on laundering your delicates. Start with some good lingerie soap, this has natural chemicals that are soft on the fabrics and revitalize the elastics. Hand washing is highly recommended for lingerie but in these busy times we sometimes get lazy. Your bras should always be hand washed, especially if they have an under wire. Washing your bra at night then letting hang over night takes just a couple of minutes and it should be dry in the morning. As for your under wear, if you are going to use the washing machine, use the delicate cycle on a cold wash and put them in a laundry bag, forget about using the dryer unless you want to purchase new underwear every week. I will write some more on this subject in the next couple of weeks!

Different Bras for different Necklines

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Why do we need more than one style of bras? Look at how many different necklines woman wear and believe it or not, every style of bra gives us a different shape, which enhances each neckline. For example: a balconet bra goes great under a sweetheart neckline; a plunge bra works with a low V neckline; a demi-cup bra gives a clean line to a square neck top; So if you are ever wondering how many bras you should have, think of 2 for each different neckline you wear… and don’t forget your basic everyday or t-shirt bra.

Being prepared

We all need to have a look in our lingerie drawer from time to time. At this time of the year as summer is just around the corner, we need to see what we have for traveling. Things to consider; is it light weight for packing? Do I have something that is fun and something that I can cover up in and of course do my every day staples look fresh enough to be seen by others?
